An increase in COVID-19 infections around the U.S. has sent more cities into new high-risk categories that are supposed to trigger indoor mask wearing, but much of the country is stopping short of bringing back restrictions amid deep pandemic fatigue. (Associated Press)

Secretary of State Antony Blinken tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and is experiencing “mild symptoms,” the State Department’s chief spokesman Ned Price said in a statement. Blinken, who is fully vaccinated and boosted, has not seen President Joe Biden in person “for several days,” Price said. (USA Today)

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Vaccine Monitor survey, published Wednesday, only 18% of parents of children under 5 said they would vaccinate their child against COVID-19 as soon as a vaccine was available. Nearly 40% of parents of young children said they would “wait and see” before vaccinating their child, 11% said they would get the vaccine only if required, and 27% said they would “definitely not” vaccinate their child against COVID-19.

 

KANE COUNTY: 250 New Cases, 0 Deaths; Case Rate Is Higher Than State as a Whole

Kane County recorded 250 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths in data posted on the Illinois Department of Public Health website.

To date, there have been 129,552 positive COVID-19 cases countywide, and 1,127 Kane County residents have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

Kane County is averaging 35.4 cases per day per 100,000 population, which is higher than the state as a whole.

 

STATE OF ILLINOIS: 5,748 New Cases, 14 Deaths; ICU Bed Availability Drops To 22%; More Young Adults Getting Infected

As you can see by the chart above, more younger Illinois adults are contracting COVID-19 during this latest rise, with the highest number in the 20-29 age category.

The fifth wave is different than any we’ve seen in the past, as deaths have either dramatically decline or have yet to catch up with the tide of new cases.

The state of Illinois today recorded one of its highest totals in months — 5,748 new cases. There were 14 COVID-19 deaths statewide.

The totals to date are 3,157,458 positive COVID-19 cases and 33,643 COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic began. There have been 4,291 “probable deaths” to consider, as well.

The daily case rate continues to rise, and is at 32.9 per 100,000 population.

About 22% of Illinois ICU beds are available.
