COVID-19 UPDATE: Fauci Says U.S. in a ‘Different Phase’ of Pandemic; Kane Deaths Drop By 1; New York State Is U.S. Hot Spot

OVERVIEW: Fauci Says U.S. in a ‘Different Phase’ of Pandemic; New York State Is U.S. Hot Spot; BA.2.12.1 At 29% of U.S. Infections

Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday the coronavirus is under better control in the United States, but the pandemic isn’t over — and the challenge is how to keep improving the situation. “We are in a different moment of the pandemic,” said Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, in an interview with The Associated Press. After a brutal winter surge, “we’ve now decelerated and transitioned into more of a controlled phase,” he said. “By no means does that mean the pandemic is over.”

Health experts say that people in U.S. COVID-19 hot spot, which includes cities like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Binghamton, should be increasing their precautions. “These are areas where CDC recommends people should wear a mask in public indoor settings due to an increasing level of severe disease and the potential for significant health care strain,” Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, the C.D.C. director, told reporters on Tuesday. (The New York Times)

BA.2.12.1 was responsible for 29% of new COVID-19 infections nationally last week, according to data reported Tuesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And it caused 58% of reported infections in the New York region. (The Mercury-News)

KANE COUNTY: 136 New Cases; Deaths Total Drops By 1; Case Rates Are Higher Than in October 2021

Kane County’s total number of COVID-19 cases went up by 136, but the COVID-19 death total for Kane County dropped by one, according to data posted on the Illinois Department of Public Health website.

An adjustment in totals posted by IDPH is not uncommon. The website has a daily note that says, “All numbers displayed are provisional and subject to change.”

The dead totals represent the number of Kane County residents who died, not the number of people who died in Kane County. So if person died in a Kane County hospital and that person’s residency is later determined to be in another county, the death totals would be adjusted later — and that is just one of many possible reasons numbers are provisional and subject to change.

The totals for Kane County are 128,122 positive cases and 1,125 COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic began.

As you can see by the above IDPH graphic “Case Rate 7-Day Rolling Average,” Kane County cases continue to rise and are now at a higher level than they were in October and November.

STATE OF ILLINOIS: 3,434 New Cases, 8 Deaths Statewide

The state of Illinois added 3,434 new COVID-19 cases but just eight deaths in data reported today by the IDPH.

The statewide COVID-19 totals to date are 3,128,134 positive cases and 33,592 deaths.

About 23% of ICU beds are available statewide. Diagnosed COVID-19 hospital admissions continue to rise, with a seven-day rolling average of 45.
