SCHOOL CLOSING UPDATE: All Kane County Public Schools Open Friday, Jan. 14 — All Will Be Off Coming Monday For MLK Day

Kane County public school district officials, teachers, students and parents are looking forward to a long weekend after a challenging week that included one high school closing for a day and multiple media reports of significant absences of staff and students.
Despite those challenges, almost all Kane County public schools were open this past week. They will have Monday (Jan. 17, 2022) off for the Martin Luther King Day of Service, and two of the districts will have Tuesday off, as well, for School Improvement Day.
As of today (Friday, Jan. 14, 2022), none of the Kane County public school district websites are reporting any school closures.
Earlier in the week, Central High School in School District 301 was closed Monday (Jan. 10, 2022) due to staffing shortages.
All schools in U-46 were back up and running Monday, following several school closings the previous week due to staffing shortages.
Several Kane County school districts returned from winter break to in-person classes on Monday, Jan. 10.

The third semester at East Aurora School District 131 students started Monday, Jan. 10, according to the District 131 calendar.
Flu & COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic at East High
Flu vaccinations will be available for individuals aged 4 and up and COVID-19 vaccinations will be available for individuals aged 5 and up at East Aurora High School, 500 Tomcat Lane, Aurora IL 60505.

- 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. EAHS Field House
First dose, second dose, third dose, booster, and flu shots will be available on both dates. Individuals ages 4-17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for either vaccination.

According to the West Aurora School District 129 calendar, students returned from winter break to class on Thursday, Jan. 6.
According to the District 101 website, students returned to school Monday, Jan. 10, 2022, following winter break.
The presumption is that schools are open if there is no message on the district’s website.
A message posted on the district website Monday said all sessions for Central High School were cancelled that day, Jan. 10, 2022, “due to the inability to meet the demands of staffing.”
According to the District 301 website, students had returned to school after the winter break on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.
According to the Geneva School District 304 website, students returned to classes on Monday, Jan. 10.

As shared in our last communication, the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois State Board of Education released a statement that they are aligning their guidance for school settings with the recently released CDC guidance. We anticipate additional updates and are closely monitoring these developments as we work to maximize in-person learning for students in a safe as possible environment. We remain committed to keeping our school community updated as we move forward with any changes.
What are the current practices?
We have received questions regarding school exclusion. Given the increase in COVID cases, our nursing offices will not be able to reach out to each family individually. Given that, we would like to share important information with our school community. Below is a link to our current protocols for what to do if your child is sick, has tested positive for COVID, or is a close contact to an individual who has COVID. Please take the time to click on the link below and carefully read any sections that pertain to your family’s situation. The information is not inclusive of all situations but is a helpful resource.
Remember to call your school’s attendance line if:
- Your child is sick (vaccinated or unvaccinated)
- Your child is unvaccinated and there is a pending test in the household not taken within 48 hours of symptom onset
- Your child has tested positive for COVID-19
- Your unvaccinated child is a close contact to a confirmed case (in the home, outside the home in the community, or at school)
According to the District 302 website, Kaneland students returned to school Monday (Jan. 3, 2022).
JAN. 10 UPDATE
CDC Guidance Adopted For Pre-K Through 12 Schools
As mentioned in a previous message, the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the Kane County Health Department announced they would be adopting the CDC guidance for Pre-K through 12 schools.
The district has reviewed the updated guidance, and I would like to inform families how it will impact our students.
- Positive student cases will continue observing a 10-day removal from in-person school for the following reasons:
- Elevated District 300 positive students cases;
- Inability to ensure students are wearing a well-fitted mask around others and at home;
- Inability to ensure students avoid being around immunocompromised staff and students; and
- Inability to ensure 6 feet of physical distancing when not wearing a mask (particularly while eating meals).
We will continue to review and reevaluate the positive student case isolation period with the opportunity to modify if warranted.
- Close Contacts:
- Fully-Vaccinated Close Contacts do not need to observe a removal from in-person school. Click on this link for more details.
- Unvaccinated Close Contacts (school day or household) will observe a 5-day removal from in-person school. Click on this link for more details. Please see the table below for the revised return to school dates.
- Athletics Close Contacts will continue following the previous guidance until we receive updated guidance from our local health department.
Please note, this announcement does not change the State of Illinois’ universal masking requirement for anyone inside school buildings. The Governor’s indoor mask mandate for school is still in effect until further notice.
Next Steps for Families:
If this updated guidance impacts your student, your school will be contacting you regarding the change in your student’s return date to school. We ask that you do not call or email the school as they are working expeditiously to promptly notify all families impacted.
Additionally, we ask that parents comply with the following reminders:
- All students must mask and maintain social distancing at all times.
- Close contacts are encouraged to test on day 5, if possible, before returning to in-person learning.
- If a student develops symptoms, they should immediately isolate until a negative test confirms symptoms are not caused by COVID-19.
Students who have tested positive will continue observing their original removal from their in-person school period.

JAN. 9 UPDATE
All U-46 Schools Open on Jan. 10
According to the District 303 website, St. Charles students returned to school Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2022).

On Monday (Jan. 10, 2022), 188 employees District 303 called in sick along with 1,119 students, according to an article in the Daily Herald. District 303 serves about 12,000 pre K-12 students.
