“What’s closed, what’s open” is more than a little different for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in Kane County, IL.

A year ago, the “open/closed” advice included a Kane County Health Department recommendation to avoid big celebrations and get-togethers, reduce in-person holiday shopping and do all we can to stop the spread.

This year, with the Omicron variant raging, health officials are still advising to stay away from big crowds, and many cities across the country and around the world are scaling back or canceling New Year’s Eve celebrations. But vaccinated folks can still get together in small groups.

Because the New Year’s holiday is on Saturday this year, there are some unusual changes.

The stock exchanges, for example, are always closed on New Year’s Day. But since the holiday is on a Saturday, it’s open on Friday, when many banks, businesses and units of government observe the holiday this year.

Some municipal government offices are taking two days off — either Thursday, Dec. 30 and Friday, Dec. 31 or Friday, Dec. 31, and Monday, Jan. 3. Most are just taking the day off Friday, Dec. 31. Some aren’t taking any days off at all. Scroll down to find out details in your municipality.

Kane County non-emergency offices are closed on New Year’s Eve Day in observance of the holiday. The Kane County Connects daily e-newsletters will take that day off, as well.

Banks

  • The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is open on New Year’s Eve Day. That’s the way it works: The holiday is “not observed” when it it falls on a Saturday.
  • Local brick-and-mortar banks are closed on Saturday for the New Year’s Day holiday. Hours for New Year’s Eve vary, so consult your local bank before you go. Some major national banks will close early on New Year’s Eve.

Businesses

  • Some local businesses are closed New Year’s Day and might close early on New Year’s Eve, but consult your local chambers of commerce for more information. Most local restaurants — and many of the big-name fast-food chains — are open. In fact, restaurants are usually very busy on New Year’s Eve, so make your reservation early.
  • Some McDonald’s locations were closed on Christmas Day, but that generally doesn’t apply to New Year’s Day. “Please refer to the restaurant locator to confirm if your local restaurant is open during the Christmas period.”
  • Target and Walmart were closed on Christmas Day, but they’re open New Year’s Day.
  • Many pharmacies will be open, including CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. Some have limited hours on New Year’s Day. Obviously, the hours vary by store, so call ahead before making the trip.

Cities And Villages

Most municipalities’ non-emergency offices, including public works facilities, are closed Jan. 1 because the holiday is on Saturday this year.

However, it’s really a mixed bag in terms of which days are observed as New Year’s holidays. Some take off Thursday and Friday, some take off Friday and Monday. Most just take Friday off, and some don’t take any time off at all for the New Year’s observance.

Waste and recycling collection services generally operate a holiday schedule, and that usually means a one-day delay, if your usual garbage collection day is Friday.

However, some communities are not affected at all. Batavia refuse collection, for example, will run on the usual day the weeks. The schedule is not affected by the New Year’s holidays.
