OVERVIEW: U.S. Cases at Highest on Record; Cincinnati Declares State of Emergency; 281 Million Cases Worldwide

More than a year after the vaccine was rolled out, new coronavirus cases in the U.S. have soared to the highest level on record at more than 265,000 per day on average, a surge driven largely by the highly contagious Omicron variant, the Los Angeles Times reports.

COVID-19 patients are at risk for serious long-term kidney damage, according to the results of a new investigation.

The surge in COVID-19 cases during the holidays prompted Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley to declare a state of emergency for the city. As of Wednesday, 26 Cincinnati firefighters were quarantined due to COVID-19,  to an already lean staff down 70 firefighters since July 2019 due to retirements, injuries and other issues, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Globally, there have been 281,808,270 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 5,411,759 deaths, reported to WHO. As of Dec. 28, 2021, a total of 8,687,201,202 vaccine doses have been administered.

 

KANE COUNTY: 845 New Cases, No Additional Deaths; 13.2% Test Positivity Rate

Kane County recorded another 845 new COVID-19 cases today, but the good news is that there were no additional coronavirus-related deaths of Kane County residents.

Kane County’s totals to date are 85,159 positive cases and 945 deaths.

The county’s test positivity rate continues to surge along with the numbers of new cases. Today, the IDPH reports Kane County’s seven-day test positivity rate at 13.2%.

 

STATE OF ILLINOIS: 21,098 New Cases, 50 Deaths; 471 COVID Patients

Illinois recorded another 21,098 new coronavirus cases and 50 additional deaths, according to data posted today on the Illinois Department of Public Health website.

The statewide totals to date are 2,119,162 positive cases and 27,734 deaths.

In Region 8, which encompasses Kane and DuPage counties, the seven-day test positivity rate jumped to 13.0% — 5% above the state threshold.

According to the IDPH, the seven-day average number of Region 8 COVID-19 patients increased to 471. The percentage of available ICU beds in Region 8 fell to 19%.
