COVID-19 UPDATE: WHO Experts Say U.S. Should Pay Attention to Europe Surge; 3 Kane Deaths Over Weekend; 7,359 New Cases Statewide

OVERVIEW: Cases Growing in Europe, Germany; Wisconsin Numbers Rising; U.S. Reopens Borders

Germany’s coronavirus infection rate climbed to its highest recorded level yet on Monday as what officials have called a “pandemic of the unvaccinated” gathers pace, the Associated Press reports.

The World Health Organization is urging the United States to pay close attention and learn from the missteps in Europe, which is at the epicenter of the pandemic. Coronavirus cases there are soaring – in the last month alone, they’ve jumped over 50%. The same is happening with hospitalizations – they’ve almost doubled in the same time frame.

Confirmed coronavirus cases continue to rise in Wisconsin. The seven-day average jumped to 2,193 cases per day, up from 2,075 on Friday. Tests confirmed almost 5,000 new cases since the state’s last update on Friday (4,968), including 1,197 cases in the past 24-hour period, WBAY reports.

The United States reopened its borders for fully vaccinated travelers from dozens of countries today, ending more than 18 months of restrictions on international travel that left families separated from loved ones and cost the global travel industry hundreds of billions of dollars in tourism revenue.
