COVID-19 UPDATE: Child Infections Up 32%; 4,589 New Illinois Cases; Kane-DuPage Hospitalizations Rising

OVERVIEW: European Death Toll Could Hit 2 Million By Spring; 2021 U.S. COVID Deaths Higher Than 2020 So Far; Child COVID Cases Up 32% in 2 Weeks

Europe’s death toll from COVID will exceed two million people by next spring, the World Health Organization projected on Tuesday, adding that the continent remained “firmly in the grip of the COVID19 pandemic,” the New York Times reports.

COVID-19 deaths in 2021 surpassed the total from 2020 this week, with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data showing cases rising around the country ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, Fox News reports.

The United States is not headed for lockdowns like the ones facing European countries, even though coronavirus cases are rising with the arrival of winter, Jeff Zients, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, told reporters this week. “We are not headed in that direction,” Zients said.

A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll found 74 percent of Americans say their lives are “normal” again after almost two years of living under the coronavirus pandemic, The Hill reports. The survey indicated that 21 percent described their lives as “very normal,” and 53 percent said their lives are “somewhat normal” when factoring in “the impact of COVID-19.”

Coronavirus cases in children in the United States have risen by 32% from about two weeks ago, a spike that comes as the country rushes to inoculate children ahead of the winter holiday season, pediatricians told the New York Times.
