McLean Boulevard, Kimball Street in Elgin Closed For Railroad, Nicor Gas Projects

Two high-traffic roads in Elgin are closed for railroad and Nicor Gas construction projects.

According to a city of Elgin news release, two projects on North McLean Boulevard and another project on Kimball Street will require detours.

City officials are asking drivers to find alternative routes and avoid delays in the coming weeks.

Full Closure of McLean Boulevard Just South of Big Timber

From 8 a.m. today (Tuesday, Sept. 14) through 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at the latest, Union Pacific will make repairs to the track crossing on North McLean Boulevard.

The posted detour routes (see map above) are:

  • Northbound traffic: West on Royal, north on Randall, east on Big Timber back to McLean.
  • Southbound traffic: West on Big Timber, south on Randall, east on Royal back to McLean.

Closure of Southbound McLean Boulevard Impacting Big Timber Intersection

Immediately following and overlapping the UP project, from 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, and lasting up to one month, Nicor will perform directional boring from just north of Speedway under Big Timber Road to just south of the Metra tracks, adjacent to Multifilm.

Southbound lanes will remain closed for the extent of this project, and alternate routes avoiding the Big Timber/McLean intersection should planned.

The posted detour routes (see map above) are:

  • Southbound traffic: West then south on Todd Farm, west on Big Timber, south on Randall, east on Royal back to McLean
  • Northbound traffic: Open after Friday, Sept. 17. However, no left will be allowed on Big Timber. Instead commuters should use detour going west on  Royal, north on Randall and back to Big Timber.

Full Closure of Kimball Street Between State Street (Route 31) and Grove Avenue

From 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, through 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, Metra will make repairs to the track crossing on Kimball Street.

The posted detour routes (see map above) are:

  • Eastbound traffic: South on State, east on Chicago, north on Center/Dundee.
