Have Fun -- And Get Vaccinated -- at Elgin Fringe Festival!

Have Fun — And Get Vaccinated — at Elgin Fringe Festival!

One of the great, more-recently added festivals in Kane County is the Elgin Fringe Festival, which will start Friday, Sept. 3, and continue through Sunday, Sept. 10.

Health officials say that, if you want to go, you should be vaccinated. But if you aren’t vaccinated, the Kane County Health Department has an alternative: Get vaccinated at the Fringe Fest.

KCHD, in partnership with Illinois Department of Public Health, will provide COVID vaccines at the Elgin Fringe Festival – Family Fringe. Vaccinations will take place from from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Elgin Civic Center Plaza, 150 Dexter Court, Elgin.

In addition, the KaneVax Hub at 501 N. Randall Street in Batavia is open Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. To schedule an appointment, visit KaneVax.org. Walk-ins are also welcome.

What Is Fringe?

Fringe Festivals focus on performing arts but also include film, visual art, music, and other types of art forms. Performances take place in downtown areas in cafes, theaters, storefronts, and a variety of other locations.

The first Fringe Festival started in 1947 in Edinburgh, Scotland, as an alternative festival that played concurrently with the Edinburgh International Festival. There are more than 20 fringe festivals throughout the United States with more in Canada and Europe.

Where Is Fringe?

Downtown Elgin is a prime location for a fringe festival due to its urban feel and proximity to Chicago. Now headed into its eighth year, the Elgin Fringe Festival is and inclusive and dynamic experience.

“We are first come-first served, uncurated, uncensored, and 100% of our ticket sales go back to the artists!” organizers say on the Fringe Festival website.

Programming includes Family Fringe Day, a day filled with games, performances, and art projects that is free and open to the public, our ever-growing visual art component hosted at Side Street Studio Arts, aka Fringe Central, as well as a live music component that highlights the juggernaut of a music scene Elgin has to offer.

The city’s ever-evolving arts scene, ease of walkability, and diverse community are ingredients for a highly needed and sought after Fringe Festival.

Fringe Central

All Fringe attendees MUST VISIT FRINGE CENTRAL to pick up tickets and buttons for show entry! Please note that you will not be able to enter any shows you may have purchased tickets to unless you pick up the tickets from Fringe Central.

You may also stop by Fringe Central to purchase tickets on the spot as late as 15 minutes before any given show begins.

Fringe Central is located at 15 Ziegler Court.

Mask / COVID Policy

“While we aren’t back to full force quite yet, we are excited to be in-person with you and audiences once again. Sharing space to engage, explore, and communicate is so very important, and we are grateful for your contributions. So, we want to be clear with you on what is going on here in Elgin.”

What the Elgin Fringe Festival  is doing to work toward safer spaces:

  • Limited capacities for all shows — all ticket sales for all venues are set for 50% of what they would be for a “normal” EFF set up.
  • Enhanced cleaning procedures between every performance, including necessary tech equipment.
  • Spacing encouraged among audience members not in the same party and between the audience and the performers.
  • Properly worn masks are required of all audience members, EFF staff, and EFF volunteers (unless eating or drinking while at Martini Room or Blue Box Café). Those who are unwilling or unable to wear a mask will be asked to leave. This includes EFF artists who are enjoying the performances of the fringe friends.

What you can do:

  • We have told you the performing artists that wearing masks while performing is under your discretion, and that remains. However, if you are unvaccinated or part of an at-risk population, we strongly encourage you to wear a mask while performing.
  • Some counties around us are instituting indoor mask mandates for all. If this moves into our county, that mandate will include you as performing artists, and we will let you know the moment we hear anything so you can plan accordingly.
  • Be sure to work to maintain safe spacing from the audience during your performances.
  • Be sure wash hands, sanitize, and pay special care to cleaning props, costumes, and spaces during your time at the Elgin Fringe Festival.
  • If you are not feeling well, let an EFF representative know, and please stay home.
