4PM MONDAY UPDATE

OVERVIEW: Pfizer Says Vax Safe For 5- 11-Year-Olds; Children Account For 1 in 5 COVID Cases; U.S. Eases Travel Restrictions

The Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine has been shown to be safe and highly effective in young children ages 5 to 11, the companies announced early today (Monday, Sept. 20, 2021). Click here to read the Pfizer news release.

The need is urgent: Children now account for more than one in five new cases, and the highly contagious Delta variant has sent more children into hospitals and intensive care units in the past few weeks than at any other time in the pandemic.

The White House on Monday said it would revoke its travel ban on visitors from 33 countries, which was implemented to quell the spread of COVID-19. The 18-month travel ban on travelers from Europe, China, Iran, South Africa, Brazil and India has been crippling for the industry, which suffered a $500 billion loss in travel expenditures in 2020, including a 79 percent decease in spending from international travel, according to the U.S. Travel Association.

COVID-19 has now killed about as many Americans as the 1918-19 Spanish flu pandemic did — approximately 675,000, according to the Associated Press and other new sources.

KANE COUNTY: 259 New Cases, 5 More Deaths Over The Weekend

Deaths from COVID-19 generally peak a few weeks after the peak in cases — that has been the pattern during the pandemic.

And it seems to be the pattern now.

Kane County reported another five COVID-19 deaths over the weekend, one of the highest weekend totals in many weeks. Those five deaths bring the total to 847 since the Illinois Department of Public Health began collecting and sharing data online.

Kane County recorded 259 new cases over the weekend — an average of about 86 per day. The total number of positive cases among Kane County residents is 65,658, according to IPDH data.

The seven-day test positivity rate also is declining. It is at 3.8%, according to data posted today by the IDPH.

About 55% of Kane County residents are fully vaccinated.

Kane-DuPage Region 8 continues to show 24% ICU bed availability. The average number of COVID-19 patients has dropped slightly in each of the past 10 days.
