OVERVIEW: COVID Surging in 45 States; Chicago Puts Missouri, Arkansas On Travel Order List; Netherlands Infections Increase 500%
In 45 states, the rates of new COVID-19 cases this past week are at least 10% higher than the rates of new cases the previous week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In 34 states, new cases this past week are at least 50% higher than new cases the previous week, CNN reports.
The Chicago Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that two states — Missouri and Arkansas — have been added back to its emergency travel order. Unvaccinated travelers returning to Chicago are advised to obtain a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 72 hours prior to arrival or quarantine for a 10-day period upon arrival, Fox2 reports.
Coronavirus infections in the Netherlands skyrocketed by more than 500% over the last week, the country’s public health institute reported Tuesday. The surge follows the scrapping of almost all remaining lockdown restrictions and the reopening of night clubs in late June.
More than 1 million people in France made vaccine appointments in less than a day, according to figures released Tuesday, after President Emmanuel Macron cranked up pressure on everyone to get vaccinated to save the summer vacation season and the French economy, The Associated Press reports.
The U.S. has seen a string of COVID-19 outbreaks tied to summer camps in recent weeks in places such as Texas, Illinois, Florida, Missouri and Kansas, in what some fear could be a preview of the upcoming school year, AP reports.
