The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of a Monday single-car crash that took the life of a 52-year-old Sycamore man.
According to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office news release, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at around 5:15 a.m. Monday (June 23, 2021) to a vehicle crash in the area of IL Route 64 and Meredith Road in Virgil Township.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a red Dodge Nitro driven by Mark Hibbing, 52, of Sycamore was traveling east on IL Route 64 near Meredith Road when it crossed over the westbound lane of traffic and continued off the roadway, where it struck a tree head-on near the Great Western Trail bike path.
Hibbing was transported via Elburn Fire Department ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb for serious injuries sustained in the crash. Hibbing later succumbed to his injuries.
At the time of the crash, airbags were deployed and Hibbing’s seatbelt had been in use. The preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol did not appear to be a contributing factor.
An autopsy will be conducted by the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office at a later date.
