NWS: 4 Tornadoes in Northern Illinois Region June 25-26 — ‘Waves of Thunderstorms’ Monday

None of them were in Kane County, but the National Weather Service Chicago said there were four tornadoes identified in the Northern Illinois region Friday and Saturday.

According to the NWS’s June 25-26, 2021, Tornadoes and Flash Flooding report, an active late June weather pattern resulted in several consecutive days of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.

On June 25, these storms produced a brief multi-vortex EF-1 tornado near Danforth, IL, along with heavy rainfall south of the Kankakee River Valley. On June 26, storms produced three additional EF-0 tornadoes in the area, and heavy rainfall resulted in flash flooding in the Chicago metro and areas farther south.

Strong rotation within a storm over the city of Chicago prompted a Tornado Warning to be issued for the city, which included Downtown Chicago. This was the first Tornado Warning issued for Downtown Chicago in just over 11 years, with the last one being issued for downtown on June 23, 2010. Fortunately, this storm did not end up producing any tornadoes.

In addition to tornadoes, flash flooding occurred on June 26 in many locations where heavy rainfall-producing thunderstorms “trained” over the same locations, resulting in several inches of rain in the span of just a few hours.

Kane County missed some of the heavy rainfall. Naperville had the most in the past 24 hours, with 3.46 inches.

Batavia led in Kane with .91 inches, followed by St. Charles with .84 and Geneva with .82.

Kane County Under Flood Watch

‘Waves of Thunderstorms’ Monday

Thunderstorms with torrential downpours will make a return today. Flooding of fields, ditches, and roads are likely beneath thunderstorms, as well as a low (around a 5%) chance for wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs.

Wet Work Week Ahead

Waves of showers and storms will continue into the workweek. At least the end is in sight behind a cold front toward the middle of the week. Keep giving your umbrellas a good workout!
