Major Redevelopment of Main Street Algonquin Begins With June 21 Construction on North Harrison Street

Big plans for downtown Algonquin will begin to take shape when construction crews will break ground Monday, June 21, on the Around and About Main Street project.

The first phase of the project includes improvements along North Harrison Street, culminating with placing new roadway pavement and adding streetscape elements that include brick paver sidewalks, crosswalks, planter areas and street furniture up to Edwards Street.

From Edwards Street north to Park Street, the pavement will be rehabilitated and on-street “Sharrows” will be painted on the pavement to designate a space for bicyclists on the roadway.

Public Works Director Robert Mitchard said the second stage of construction will start in the fall and involve traffic calming features with the installation of a roundabout at Main Street and Cary-Algonquin Road, access at Riverview Drive and Main Street with a switchback roadway and roadway improvements along North Main Street.

“The village has invested in the underground infrastructure in this area and is now preparing to complete construction on this project by creating a corridor residents can enjoy with smooth driving surfaces and amenities that will create a beautiful atmosphere,” Mitchard said. “This project is also another important step in providing additional access and connection to our downtown and regional trails by creating on-street space for bicyclists that connect to trails south of Harrison Street.”

A detour will be placed for Harrison Street on June 21 to create a safe work zone as the village’s contractor, Martam Construction, begins removing pavement. Along with this work, residents will see Nicor and AT&T on-site installing new infrastructure and eliminating outdated equipment.

Detours and Closures

Detours will be required depending upon when and where construction occurs and will be provided for impacted motorists. Riverview Drive will be closed when construction occurs on Harrison Street between Edwards and Park streets. Riverview Drive will not be closed during the winter for safety reasons.
