4th STORM UPDATE: One Fatality -- an Unborn Infant -- From EF-3 Father's Day Tornado

4th STORM UPDATE: One Fatality — an Unborn Infant — From EF-3 Father’s Day Tornado

3PM FRIDAY, JUNE 25, UPDATE

The EF3 tornado that ripped a 16.1-mile path through our area very late on Father’s Day 2021 claimed one life — that of an unborn baby — according to a state of Illinois news release and media reports.

The NWS said the tornado bearing 140 mph winds damaged at least 230 residences, seriously injured at least 11 people and took one life between 11 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Sunday (June 20, 2021).

That EF3 tornado was one of three that swept the area and caused many Kane County residents to take shelter during a brutal storm.

The most significant storm damage occurred in the southwest suburbs of Naperville, Woodridge, Darien, Burr Ridge, and Willow Springs, but a second, EF-0 tornado with peak winds of 85 mph and path length of 3.2 miles touched down in Plainfield and lifted in Romeoville. Tree damage was common along the path of the tornado.

A third tornado, this one also an EF-0, with peak winds of 75 mph and path length of 3.3 miles touched down near South Haven, IN, and caused primarily tree damage.

There were also other areas of rotation and some with damage occurring and these may also have been tornadoes. Kaneville and North Aurora were among the areas that reported rotation and spotty damage.

According to the NWS  report, there were many other minor injuries that were treated on scene.

Biggest Hit Since 2017

The tornado was the most impactful in the NWS Chicago County Warning Area since Feb. 28, 2017 (Naplate/Ottawa) and last EF-2+ in the Chicago metro counties since June 22, 2015 (Coal City). More on tornado climatology for the area here.

Most of these looked much more brief, although in far northwest Indiana there was sustained rotation from near Hobart to South Haven and eastward.

While there was a persistent tornado in the densely populated southwest Chicago suburbs, the number of serious injuries was relatively small. This, at least in part, had to do with preparedness and people taking action when the warnings were issued. For more on severe weather preparedness, see here.

The Forecast:  There are more storms coming later in the week.

Wet weather is on the forecast horizon for late week, with signs that 2+ inches of rain may fall in some parts of the Illinois and Indiana region within the Thursday-to-Saturday time frame.
