First Big Regional Event Set For Kane County’s New Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course

The Aurora Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Chicago Area Track & Field Organizing Committee announced Friday (May 14, 2021) the first regional event to be held at the new Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course at the Settler’s Hill site in Kane County.

The National Intercollegiate Running Club Association has chosen the Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course as its host venue for the 2022 Great Plains Regional.

The event, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 6, 2022, will be a series of men’s and women’s long distance running competitions attended by as many as 400 collegiate participants from 19 colleges and universities in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota.

Partnership Key to Winning Bid

Based on the success of the Great Plains Regional, NIRCA may choose to host its National Cross Country Championships in a multi-year agreement with the CVB and Chicago Area Track & Field.

“Working with Al Edgecombe at Chicago Area Track & Field and staff at the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association has been a great experience, and our collaboration was key in bringing this fantastic event to the Aurora Area,” said Pete Garlock, Director of Sales at the Aurora Area CVB.

“I am certain this will be one of the premier running competitions we will see in the Midwest next year, and we look forward to welcoming cross country runners from all over the country,” said Garlock.

“These events are a great opportunity for us to put ourselves on the map locally, regionally, and nationally,” said Al Edgecombe, director of the Chicago Area Track & Field Organizing Committee.
