One of the world’s most renowned architects was struck and killed while riding his bicycle Saturday afternoon in the area of Burlington Road and Old LaFox Road.
According to Campton Hills police reports, Helmut Jahn was struck at the intersection when the 81-year-old failed to stop at a stop sign. He was struck by the two vehicles headed in opposite directions, police said.
Jahn was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the drivers was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The other driver and his passenger were not injured, according to the release.
According to media reports, Jahn lived in Chicago but spent the weekends at a historic St. Charles farm and frequently rode his bicycle in rural areas.
Jahn was known for designs such as the Sony Center on the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany; the Messeturm in Frankfurt, Germany; the One Liberty Place in Philadelphia, PA, and many other buildings around the world.
Locally, he was best known as the designer of the Thompson Building in Chicago, which the state of Illinois put up for sale in an announcement on May 3.
In the state of Illinois news release announcing the sale, officials said it would have cost the state $325 million to bring the structure into “a state of good repair.” Built in 1985, the 17-story building encompasses about 1.2 million square feet of enclosed area of which the state occupies nearly 780,000 square feet.
According to Wikipedia, Jahn was born in Zirndorf near Nuremberg, Germany, in 1940, and grew up watching the reconstruction of the city, which had been largely destroyed by Allied bombing campaigns.
After attending the Technical University of Munich from 1960 to 1965, he worked with Peter C. von Seidlein for a year. In 1966, he emigrated to Chicago to further study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, but left school without earning his degree.
