April 6 Referendum Results — Maple Park Fire District Wins Big; Sleepy Hollow Tax Extension Falls

With three of three precincts reporting in Kane County, it looks like the Maple Park & Countryside Fire District tax extension referendum is an easy winner.

According to the Kane County Clerk’s Office website, the referendum garnered 165 “yes” votes to 62 “no” votes.

The Sleepy Hollow tax extension fell by about a 2-to-1 margin.

Overview

The two referendums on April 6 ballots that are primarily in Kane County are propositions to increase the tax extension limitation — one for the Maple Park & Countryside Fire District in DeKalb and Kane counties and another for the village of Sleepy Hollow.

The other three referendums mentioned on the Kane County Clerk’s Office website are in the village of Hoffman Estates, which is primarily in Cook County but has a small section in Kane.

Maple Park & Countryside Fire District Tax Extension

Shall the limiting rate under the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law for the Maple Park & Countryside Fire Protection District, DeKalb and Kane Counties, Illinois, be increased by an additional amount equal to 31.76% above the limiting rate for the 2019 levy year for the purpose of staffing, equipment and facilities and be equal to .72747% of the equalized assessed valuation of the taxable property therein for the 2021 levy year?

(1) The amount of taxes extended at the most recent limiting rate would be $472,320. The amount of taxes that would be extended if this referendum passes would be $622,320.

(2) If the proposition were to pass, the owner of a single-family home with a fair cash market value of $100,000.00 at the time of the referendum would pay $58.45 in additional taxes.

(3) If the proposition is approved, the aggregate extension for 2021 will be determined by the limiting rate set forth in the proposition, rather than the otherwise applicable limiting rate calculated under the provisions of the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law commonly known as the Property Tax Cap Law.

Village of Sleepy Hollow Tax Extension

Shall the limiting rate under the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law for the Village of Sleepy Hollow, Kane County, Illinois, be increased by an additional amount equal to 0.182439% above the limiting rate for municipal purposes for levy year 2021 and be equal to 0.912196% of the equalized assessed value of the taxable property therein for levy year 2021?

(1) The approximate amount of taxes extendable at the most recently extended limiting rate is $843,877 and the approximate amount of taxes extendable therefor if the proposition is approved is $1,054,846.

(2) For the 2021 levy year the approximate amount of the additional tax extendable against property containing a single family residence and having a fair market value at the time of the referendum of $100,000 is estimated to be $60.81.|(3) If the proposition is approved, the aggregate extension for 2021 will be determined by the limiting rate set forth in the proposition, rather than the otherwise applicable limiting rate calculated under the provisions of the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law commonly known as the Property Tax Cap Law.
