An Elburn woman pushed her husband out of the way of an oncoming truck before she was struck and killed Monday at the intersection of McLean Road and IL Route 20 in Elgin.
According to a Wednesday news release from the Kane County Coroner’s Office, coroner personnel responded at around 11:15 a.m. Monday (March 15, 2021) to a call from the Amita Health St. Joseph Hospital emergency room to a report of a woman who had died after being struck by a vehicle.
Officials identified the woman as Katarzyna Kurek-Polk, 37, of Elburn.
According to the Coroner’s Office news release, Katarzyna and her spouse were driving close to the intersection of McLean Road and IL Route 20 when she and her husband stopped to check on a motorist who had run off the road. Kane County was hit by a sudden snow and sleet storm at about that time on Monday.
“As she was standing along the roadway, a truck came toward them,” Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said in the news release. “Katarzyna pushed her husband out of the way, and she was hit by the truck.”
Katarzyna was transported from Amita Health St. Joseph Hospital to the Kane County Morgue, where an autopsy was performed on Wednesday, March 17, 2021. The preliminary cause of death was blunt force trauma caused by being stuck by the truck.
Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensic lab for further analysis.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office is cooperating with Elgin Police Department in the further investigation of this incident.
