Build An Herb Garden, Create a Butterfly House -- And Save The Date For April 17 And May 19

Build An Herb Garden, Create a Butterfly House — And Save The Date For April 17 And May 19

You see butterfly houses at major zoos and some wonderful, local parks — but did you ever think about making one of your own?

And maybe you’d tasted fresh parsley, mint, dill or cilantro that you bought at the grocery store — but have you tried growing them yourself?

Now you can make your own culinary herb garden and create a beautiful butterfly house during the Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s 2021 Pollinator Workshop Series.

Join Forest Preserve District naturalists for a fun and interactive series of programs. At the first workshop — from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at Creek Bend Nature Center — you’ll be able to create an herb garden.

Herbs can do far more than simply spice up your kitchen life – they provide nectar and play host to an amazing array of pollinators! Participants will be given all the tools necessary to build a culinary herb garden, for use by both home cooks and local butterflies. Plants, pots, and information on proper garden maintenance will be provided.

The second workshop — from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday, May 16 at Creek Bend Nature Center — you’ll be able to build a butterfly house. Bring a hammer and your creativity to create a stylish butterfly house that will beautify your home. Participants will work with pre-cut wood and tacks to assemble this simple building project.

The Forest Preserve District will provide the painting supplies so you can add your own special finishing touches. Note: Houses are intended for decorative use only.

Attend one or both workshops! Advance registration is required for both the “Pollinator Friendly Herb Garden Workshop,” and the “Build a Butterfly House Workshop.” Registration is $15/herb garden or butterfly house, and includes the materials. Or, register for both Herb Garden & Butterfly House Workshops for $25. Call 630-444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com to register.

Creek Bend Nature Center is located within LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve at 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles.
