Spray paint canisters can’t be recycled like other common metal containers unless they’re emptied of their contents and disassembled. So, they typically end up in landfills.

The trouble is, residual liquid and gas remain inside seemingly empty aerosol paint cans, and these substances can be hazardous when they leach into the groundwater surrounding residential communities and natural habitats.

Luckily, members of the public can now responsibly dispose of their aerosol spray paint cans at Geneva Ace Hardware, thanks to a new partnership with Flat Can Recycling.

“Last year Flat Can Recycling came on board to take spray paint at the Kane County Recycling events in St. Charles, adding another great public service to our programs,” said Jennifer Jarland, Kane County Recycling Coordinator. “This awesome woman-owned and operated business is focused on transparency and circular economy, where waste becomes feedstock for new products.”

The company disassembles the can, and with the help of closed loop processing partners recycles every component (including paint, can, lid and nozzle), resulting in minimal waste. Like Geneva Ace Hardware, Flat Can Recycling is doing the right thing for the residents of Kane County and Chicagoland.

“We’re thrilled that Geneva Ace Hardware has come on board as a spray paint can recycling drop spot,” said Kathryn Gordon, president of Flat Can Recycling. “It’s amazing to see locally-owned businesses, like Geneva Ace, help mitigate the negative effects of aerosol paint on the environment while servicing their community.”

Geneva Ace Hardware is located at 617 W. State St. and is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Ace Hardware accepts all brands of spray paint including Seymour of Sycamore, Krylon, Rustoleum, and Aervoe. A recycling fee of $0.75 per can applies, payable by the resident.

Geneva Ace also recycles gallon cans of latex paint, though that program is temporarily suspended due to the cold, which freezes the paint in the outdoor storage area. Geneva Ace managers will start that program up again in the spring.
