What’s Open, What’s Closed For Jan. 18 Martin Luther King Day 2021?
Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year falls on Monday, Jan. 18.
Jan. 18 is also the National Day of Service, observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off.”
MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
What’s open and what’s closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year in Kane County, IL, is complicated by all sorts of factors.
This year’s MLK Day is in the midst of a pandemic, so some of the traditional events have been changed or gone virtual, and “what’s open” depends in part on government and business response to Tier 3 mitigations.
For the most part, businesses are open on the holiday, and people are encouraged — especially in light of the Tier 3 mitigations — to support local businesses and restaurants.
Government garbage pickup is a mixed bag, so check your municipality’s website. MLK Day is not a holiday for Groot services, for example.
Many local government offices have limited access or no in-person access during Tier 3 mitigations. Others continue to have regular office hours, so scroll down for more information.
