
What’s Closed, What’s Open For Thanksgiving 2020? (And Tier 3)
With Tier 3 in place and residents being asked to stay home as much as possible during this Thanksgiving holiday, you’d think that there wouldn’t be much to report about what’s open and what’s closed this year.
But at the same time, people have to do some shopping, and with the holiday shopping season about to launch, there are all kinds of mixed messages.
The following is a compendium of what’s closed and what’s open in Kane County during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Right off the bat, it’s worth noting that Walmart, Target and Best Buy are among the big retailers closed on Thanksgiving Day 2020.
It’s also worth noting that there will be detours in Aurora due to holiday traffic expected for the Chicago Premium Outlet Mall.
Kane County non-emergency offices are closed both Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27, 2020. Most offices of cities and villages are closed both days — and many are closed to the public altogether due to Tier 3 mitigations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Banks
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is closed on Thanksgiving Day, open on Friday.

Cities and Villages
The following is information on non-emergency office hours for Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27, in Kane County villages and cities based on the calendar information of each office’s website.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Many offices are closed due to the state’s Tier 3 COVID-19 mitigations, so be sure to click the links below for more information directly from the municipal websites.
- Village of Algonquin offices are closed both days.
City of Aurora offices are closed Thanksgiving Day. Beginning the week of Nov. 30, Aurora City Hall and other general city buildings will only be open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The first hour is reserved for senior citizens.
- City of Batavia administrative offices are closed both days.
- Village of Big Rock offices are closed due to pandemic.
- Village of Burlington offices are closed both days — and always closed on Fridays.
- Village of Campton Hills offices are closed to the public due to the pandemic.
- Village of Carpentersville offices are closed Thanksgiving Day. (Check the website for updates on the COVID-19 situation.)
- Village of East Dundee offices are closed both days. (Check the website for updates on the COVID-19 situation.)
- Village of Elburn offices are both days.
- City of Elgin offices are closed both days. (The city’s non-essential offices are closed to the public during Tier 3 mitigations.)
City of Geneva offices are closed both days. (The city’s non-essential offices are closed to the public during Tier 3 mitigations.)
- Village of Gilberts offices are closed both days.
- Village of Hampshire offices are closed both days.
- Village of Huntley offices are closed both days. (Village Hall is closed until further notice due to the pandemic.)
- Village of Lily Lake offices are closed Thanksgiving Day.
- Village of Maple Park offices are closed. (Village Hall is closed due to Tier 3.)
- Village of Montgomery offices are closed Thanksgiving Day and Friday.
- Village of North Aurora offices are closed both days. (Website says Village Hall is open on non-holidays.)
- Village of Pingree Grove offices are closed both days. (The Municipal Center lobby is presently closed due to Tier 3.)

City of St. Charles offices are closed both days. (City buildings are closed due to Tier 3.)
- Village of Sugar Grove offices are closed both days. (Offices are open on non-holidays, but village suggests doing business online, if you can.)
- Village of Wayne offices are closed both days — and closed to walk-ins due to Tier 3.
- Viilage of West Dundee offices are closed both days.
Garbage Collection
This category could fall under the cities and villages header, but there are township services, as well.
For the most part, curbside garbage and recycling services are delayed a day for any pickups on Thursday or Friday, but it’s always best to check with your waste hauler. Here’s a list, courtesy of Kane County Recycles.

Libraries And Park Districts
Local library and park district office hours truly are a mixed bag, due to the pandemic. Virtually all are closed on Thanksgiving Day, but closings on Friday, Nov. 29, vary.
Post Offices
- Postal offices are closed on Thursday, Nov. 26, but open on Friday, Nov. 27. Post Office officials strongly recommend you send your packages early this year.
Schools
- All local schools are closed Thursday and Friday.
- Many are closed or have virtual parent conferences Monday through Wednesday.
- Many have gone to remote learning during the Tier 3 mitigations.
