Kane County Veterans Affairs Superintendent Jacob Zimmerman said 104 of the 121 residents of the Ottawa facility have been infected and 27 have died. Additionally, 94 staff have been infected.

“There is a terrible COVID-19 outbreak at the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs La Salle Veterans Home,” Zimmerman said.

“Our friends at the LaSalle County Veterans Assistance Commission are asking for help with items needed for residents of the nursing home,” he said, asking that his request be shared widely.

Donations can be dropped off or mailed to La Salle County Veterans Assistance Commission, 119 West Madison St., Room 103A, Ottawa, IL 61350.

Items needed include shampoo, conditioner, body wash, shaving cream, lotion, denture glue and cleaner, tooth paste and tooth brushes, and electric razors.

All items should be in new and unopened condition.

The drive is active until Dec. 31.
