2020 Election Results: Referendums — Graduated Tax Loses, Batavia Voters OK Sale of Cannabis
3:50PM WEDNESDAY UPDATE
The graduated income tax amendment referendum has lost. To be passed, it needed 60% of the vote or more, and it’s far short of that. With 98% of the vote recorded, it’s 2,747,250 “no” and 2,242,164 “yes”.
The referendum to raise the Dundee Township limiting rate lost dramatically.
Batavia voters are in favor of the sale of marijuana within city limits.
Voters in Algonquin are saying the Algonquin village clerk position should be elected rather than appointed.
Graduated Income Tax Amendment
The proposed amendment grants the state authority to impose higher income tax rates on higher income levels, which is how the federal government and a majority of other states do it. The amendment would remove the portion of the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that is sometimes referred to as the “flat tax,” that requires all taxes on income to be at the same rate.
