2020 Election Result UPDATE: State Races — Villa Edging Ward For 25th IL Senate Seat; Ugaste Leads Paschke in 65th District State Rep Contest
4:30PM FRIDAY UPDATE
Villa Edging Ward For 25th District State Senate Seat
When the election-night votes were counted, the race for the 25th District state senate seat could not have been much closer — and while the winner might not be known until the official numbers are tabulated in two weeks, it appears that Democrat Karina Villa will hold off Republican Jeanette Ward.
In unofficial totals updated Friday, Villa tallied 57,967 votes to Ward’s 56,461. Ward had the edge in Kane County, 37,595-36,205.
Because of uncounted mail-in ballots, several of the state-rep races were too close to call on election night, but as of Friday, there have not been significant changes in the totals.
In the 65th District, Dan Ugaste (REP) leads Martha Paschke (DEM) 34,732 to 32,107 with 99% of the unofficial totals reported.
In the 66th District, Suzanne M. Ness (DEM) is leading Allen Skillicorn (REP) 28,490 to 26,674 with 99% of the unofficial totals reported.

Outstanding Mail-In Votes Could Determine Timeliness of Results
One of the factors that will determine how soon we know the results of elections at any level are the numbers of outstanding mail-in ballots.
As you can see by the graphics posted by the Illinois State Board of Elections, there were 2,359,142 by-mail ballots requested in Illinois and 1,829,097 returned as of this morning (Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020).
Obviously, that’s a difference of 530,045.
No doubt, many of those outstanding mail-in ballots will arrive today and be counted today. But if the total number of outstanding ballots is higher than the margin of victory in a statewide race, it will be impossible for anyone to officially “call” an election outcome.
Again, according to the ISBE, Kane County had 92,088 mail-in ballots sent out and 81,171 of those have been received by this morning. The difference is 10,917.
Hopefully, later tonight we’ll have updated info on the number of outstanding mail-in ballots and perhaps some clarity regarding the outcomes of various races statewide and locally.
