West Chicago Man Drowns After Being Trapped Under Lawnmower in Batavia Pond

A 56-year-old West Chicago man drowned Monday after being trapped underwater beneath a lawn mower that apparently had fallen into a retention pond on Moorehead Drive in Batavia.

According to a Batavia Police Department news release, Batavia police were dispatched at around 9:06 a.m. Monday (Sept. 28, 2020) to the 900 block of Moorehead Drive for a report of a subject who was underwater.

The subject — identified today (Thursday, Oct. 1) by the Kane County Coroner’s Office as Alberto Amaro of West Chicago — was able to be freed from the mower and pulled to shore by Batavia police, Batavia Fire Department personnel and the subject’s co-workers, who were working in the area.

Amaro was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

“It is unclear how long the victim was underwater,” Batavia Police Department officials said in the news release.

Police said the exact cause of death is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.

The Coroner’s Office said an autopsy was performed on Sept. 30 at the Kane County Morgue and toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensic lab. The Coroner’s Office said the preliminary cause of death is drowning.
