2 Cats Rescued, Elgin Home Red-Tagged After Wednesday Fire

Two cats were rescued and an Elgin home on North Airlite Street was red-tagged as uninhabitable after a Wednesday fire caused about $40,000 in damage.

According to an Elgin Fire Department news release, firefighters responded at around 9 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 21, 2020) to a report of a possible structure fire in the 500 block of North Airlite Street.

Responding fire companies found a split-level home with heavy smoke coming from the residence.

The first crew arrived on scene in just under four minutes. Fire crews immediately deployed a hand line to extinguish the fire and began a search.

The fire was brought under control about 10 minutes after the arrival of the Fire Department. During the search of the home, two cats were rescued.

The home suffered smoke and fire damage to the lower level. Initial damage estimates are in excess of $40,000.

The home was occupied at the time of the fire. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries due to the fire.

The home was red-tagged as it is uninhabitable and Code Enforcement was notified for follow-up

The Elgin Fire Department Fire Investigation Team is working to determine the cause of the fire.
