Deadlines Coming Up Fast For Aurora, State Rent Or Mortgage Assistance

To ease financial burdens during COVID-19, a number of housing payment assistance programs are currently taking applications.

The city of Aurora’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program is taking applications until Aug. 31, while the state’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program is open until Aug. 28.

The state’s Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program application period is open until Sept. 4.

The city of Aurora and the Neighbor Project are co-hosting the Aurora Rent and Mortgage Assistance Open House on Thursday, Aug. 27, to assist residents with the application process for all programs.

Aurora Emergency Rental Assistance

The city of Aurora has launched a $500,000 Emergency Rental Assistance Program to support residents who have overdue rent payments because of financial strain caused by COVID-19. Eligible residents can apply for up to two months of past-due rent.

State Emergency Rental Assistance

NOTE: The deadline has been extended to Aug. 28, due to delays caused by the derecho storm.

The Illinois Housing Development Authority developed the Emergency Rental Assistance Program to support Illinois tenants unable to pay their rent due to a COVID-19-related loss of income. Approved tenants will receive a one-time grant of $5,000 paid directly to their landlord.

State Emergency Mortgage Assistance

The Illinois Housing Development Authority developed the Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program to support Illinois homeowners unable to pay their mortgages due to a COVID-19-related loss of income. Approved homeowners will receive a grant for up to $15,000 paid directly to their mortgage servicer.

Aurora Rent and Mortgage Assistance Open House

To assist residents with completing the applications of any of the three programs, the City of Aurora and The Neighbor Project are hosting the Aurora Rent and Mortgage Assistance Open House from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27.

The outdoor open house will be held at Water Street Square, 65 S. Water St., in downtown Aurora.

Residents can ask questions about the application process and work with staff to complete applications onsite. Attendance at the open house isn’t mandatory to apply to any of the programs.
