Clayton W. Vaughan, 24, agreed to a sentence of 14 years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to the offense of armed robbery, Class X felony.

Kane County Associate Judge Charles E. Petersen accepted the plea on July 28.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Lori Anderson stated in court that at about 10:45 p.m. June 30, 2018, Vaughan entered a convenience store in the in the 900 block of South Lake Street, Aurora.

Vaughan jumped the counter and attacked the victim, the owner/clerk of the store, with a metal rod.

The victim unsuccessfully attempted to frighten off Vaughan with a Smith & Wesson .380 handgun. The gun discharged as the men struggled for possession of it.

Vaughan eventually gained control of the gun and the victim fled the store. Vaughan also fled the store.

In accordance with Illinois law, Vaughan is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. Vaughan receives credit for 748 days served in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest.
