When it comes time for Kane County Connects’ annual Thanksgiving “What’s Closed, What’s Open” story, there will be at least two big retailers on the “what’s closed” list.

Target announced Monday that it will close its stores on Thanksgiving Day.

Walmart made a similar announcement on July 21, saying Walmart and Sam’s Club store locations will close on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, this year.

Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations will operate normal hours on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Information for store and club hours on Friday, Nov. 27, will be shared at a later date.

The announcements by the two big retailers likely are a signal of similar moves regarding holiday shopping in 2020.

“There’s no question, the holiday season is going to be very different this year,” Target said in its news release. “And while that first bite of pumpkin pie and gifting wish lists are still months away, today we’re giving you a first look at how we’re adjusting our plans to make the holiday shopping experience simple, safe and stress-free.”

Since March, Target has introduced COVID-19-related safety measures so guests can shop confidently in stores.

“And we’re working on even more ways to ensure that your store experience is as convenient — and contactless — as possible,” company officials said.

What To Expect in 2020

Here’s a sneak peek at Target’s holiday plans, which might be similar to those of other big-box stores:

  • Holiday deals will start in October— “Let’s face it: Historically, deal hunting and holiday shopping can mean crowded events, and this isn’t a year for crowds,” officials said. The idea is to entice more online shopping and o stretch out the in-store shopping over time.
  • Closing stores on Thanksgiving Day. Target is promising “plenty of opportunities to score the best deals on the hottest items both before and after Nov. 26.” It’s also encouraging enrollment in Target Circle — a free loyalty program that provides updates on deals throughout the season.
  • Making 20,000 more products — including fresh and frozen groceries — available via pickup and delivery services. Target says Drive UpOrder Pickup and Same-day Delivery  grew 278% in the first quarter. This holiday season, Target is doubling down, making 20,000 more gifts available.
