While a pandemic emergency and state executive orders have forced the cancellation of many Memorial Day parades and ceremonies this year, people throughout Kane County are finding ways to remember and honor our fallen heroes on or before May 25, 2020.
Of special note is that Jacob A. Zimmerman, superintendent of the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission, and his team on Wednesday (May 20, 2020) have installed the name of U.S. Army Pfc. Miguel Villalon on the Kane County Veterans Memorial.
Villalon and one other U.S. soldier were killed Jan. 11, 2020, by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
The East Aurora High School graduate’s awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with “C” Device, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Action Badge.
Memorial Day ceremonies and remembrances taking place in on May 25 in several Kane County communities, some online and others with attendees wearing masks and observing social distancing guidelines.
Aurora is hosting a virtual remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, on Facebook Live. Click this link for more information on the city’s Facebook page.
Elgin is holding a tremendous observance. The city and the Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association are partnering to hold a drive-by observance at 11 a.m. at Bluff City Cemetery. The observance is supported by a radio broadcast on WRMN Radio 1410 and a wonderful YouTube video.
Hampshire is hosting a car parade, the flag will be marched down Main Street in Maple Park, and St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina will post a special message on the city’s website and YouTube pages.
Also worthy of mention is that the National Cemetery Administration will conduct wreath-layings at all of the National Cemeteries. The closest to us is Fort Sheridan National Cemetery and Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, which will be live streamed on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.
