MONDAY, MAY 11, CORONER’S REPORT ON KANE COUNTY COVID-19 DEATHS

As of 1 p.m. May 11, 2020, Kane County has had 115 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, according to the weekly report issued by the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

This week’s additional 31 decedents represent a 37% increase in the number of deaths in one week (May 4 through May 11, 2020).

“Out of respect to the individuals lost and their families, only the age, sex, town of residence and date of death are provided in the following list below,” Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

For clarification, Russell points out that some of the decedents did not live in Kane County but died in Kane County hospitals. The non-Kane-County residents are indicated by an asterisk in the list below.

By law, the Coroner’s Office is required to report them as Kane County deaths.

“The Kane Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health are doing the very important job of researching where these individuals contacted the disease and are reporting them as such,” Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said. “This would be one reason for the difference in numbers,

In addition, all of these reported deaths tested positive for the COVID-19 virus with the approved biological test by medical personnel.

Only cases that tested positive were included in this list. COVID-19 is listed on each death certificate, which is entered by the decedents attending physician, not the coroner.

MONDAY, MAY 4, CORONER’S REPORT ON COVID-19 DEATHS

It’s important to understand why the Kane County Coroner’s Office weekly report of COVID-19-related deaths — which is presented below — shows higher numbers than those reported on the same day (Monday, May 4, 2020) on the Kane County Health Department dashboard and on the Illinois Department of Public Health website.

The Monday, May 4, coroner’s report shows 84 COVID-19-related deaths to date in Kane County. As of 4:30 p.m. Monday, the Health Department dashboard shows 57 deaths.

There are two main reasons the coroner’s numbers are higher.

First, the coroner by law reports all COVID-19-related deaths that took place in Kane County, while the Health Department dashboard and IDPH report the number of Kane County residents who died and tested positive for COVID-19.

The coroner marks the names of the non-residents with an asterisk to make that clear in his report.

On the coroner’s list below, for example, there are 10 people who died in Kane County but were not Kane County residents.

That means there are 74 Kane County residents listed in the coroner’s report today — still significantly higher than the 57 on the dashboard. Why is that?

Primarily, it’s because the Coroner’s Office has the information earlier than the IDPH or county Health Department.

The Coroner’s Office, as you know, is the “boots on the ground” agency that collects and shares data from death certificates.

“All of these reported deaths tested positive for the COVID-19 virus with the approved biological test by medical personnel,” Kane County Coroner Rob Russell says in the news release. “Only cases that tested positive were included in this list and COVID-19 is listed on each Death Certificate — which is entered by the decedent’s attending physician, not the coroner.”

The data regarding COVID-19-related deaths are subsequently collected by the IDPH, which shares information with local health department officials, who in turn share the information with the public in daily updates.

The IDPH reports the information in a daily news conference at around 2:30 p.m., and the Health Department updates its dashboard at around 4:30 p.m. daily.

Generally speaking, the IDPH and KCHD numbers appear to “catch up” with those of the Monday coroner’s report within a couple days.

For example, the coroner’s report of April 27 showed 51 total deaths, including seven who were not residents of Kane County. The KCHD dashboard showed 39 deaths on the morning of the same day, but those numbers grew in the proceeding days.

By Friday, May 1, the COVID-19 related deaths on the dashboard were up to 52.

Again, the important takeaway is that Coroner’s Office report numbers will differ from those of the KCHD and IPDH because of the timing of the reports and because the coroner reports all people who died in Kane County.

The Coroner’s Office report is valuable because it contains information that is not included in the IDPH or the KCHD reports, including the exact age of the deceased, gender, place of death and date of death.

The KCHD and IDPH reports are valuable because they are updated daily.

As Russell says in his news releases: “Both numbers are correct, but have different perspectives. Both are vitally important.”

It should also be noted that the place of death is not necessarily that person’s “home town.”

According to the IDPH, as of Monday, May 1, there were 34 deaths in Kane County nursing homes, including 16 at Bria in Geneva, nine at Fox River Rehab and Health Care and seven at Bickford of Aurora.
