The Illinois Department of Public Health this week began posting COVID-19 data by zip code, meaning you can find how many confirmed cases and numbers of tests have been performed in your geographic area.
The zip-code breakdown does not include the numbers of deaths or patients who were hospitalized. However, the page does include statewide data on people under investigation for the illness and COVID-19 patients in intensive care units.
The Kane County Health Department also provides a breakdown of number of confirmed cases by community, and some municipalities — Aurora and Elgin, for example — provide daily local statistics.
The interactive map on the state dashboard is handy, because you can toggle over an area of interest and immediate see the case data.
The IDPH site also includes important data on hospitalizations, as well as general information regarding demographics, provided in chart form. Screenshots of charts regarding deaths is provide below.
Data on Deaths in Illinois
The charts reveal interesting data regarding age, race and gender of the people in Illinois who have died after testing positive to COVID-19. (It’s important to note the the totals involve anyone who died who tested positive for the novel coronavirus. That data does not necessarily mean COVID-19 was the cause of death, according to IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike.)
Observations of note:
- The majority of deaths statewide are people over age 70. By far, the highest portion of 1,349 deaths as of today (Tuesday, April 21, 2020) are people 80 years old or older.
- About the same number of white and black people have died while testing positive. The black community has been especially hard hit by the virus.
- More men that women die after testing positive for COVID-19 in the state of Illinois.
The graphics might be hard to read in the grouping above, so we’ve posted each graphic separately and in a larger size below.
