Aurora police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man on the city’s South East Side late Friday night.
Just before midnight Friday (Feb. 8, 2020), officers were dispatched to a report of a person shot at an apartment in the 400 block of Sherman Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found a 20-year-old man later identified as John H. Smith of Aurora suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. Aurora Fire Department paramedics transported Smith to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives from Aurora Police Department’s Investigation’s Division and police officers canvassed the area looking for witnesses and information about the shooting while APD’s crime lab and evidence technicians collected forensic evidence from the shooting.
The crime does not appear to be random in nature.
