Batavia Will Put Adult-Use Cannabis Sales Question on November Ballot

The city of Batavia will ask voters in November whether they want to allow marijuana sales in city limits.

According to the city of Batavia website and local media reports, Batavia aldermen revisited their discussion at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Jan. 14.

Residents attended and voiced their concerns and opinions on the issue, and after discussion, the committee decided to leave the decision to a binding referendum vote in November 2020.

According to a Kane County Chronicle report, the question probably will read something like:

“Shall the city of Batavia permit recreational marijuana dispensaries to locate and do business within the corporate limits of the city?”

One of the state’s existing cannabis dispensaries is located in North Aurora, not far from the Batavia border.

Officials said the question would not likely address how many dispensaries might be allowed.

The city of Geneva, for example, passed an ordinance in December that will allow one medical cannabis dispensary and one recreational use dispensary.

According to an article in the Daily Herald, Batavia Alderman Alan Wolff said the chances of Batavia getting a dispensary at this time are very slim. He said there haven’t been many inquiries about opening a facility.

The January discussion in Batavia came too late for the question to be put on the upcoming March primary ballot.

The Kane County Board voted in November to prohibit adult-use marijuana sales in unincorporated areas.
