Heavy rains and heavy winds battered Northern Illinois on Tuesday afternoon, and Kane County communities took the brunt of some of the worst weather.
According to a report by the National Weather Service Chicago, multiple trees were down in Burlington, Hampshire, Huntley, Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Sugar Grove and Aurora.
Preliminary reports indicate power lines were damaged in the Burlington and Hampshire areas around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2018). Power lines in Huntley were down around 4:50 p.m.
McHenry County relayed reports of 70 mph winds recorded in Huntley.
Rain totals by community were not available as of 10:47 a.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 26), but this report will be updated when they become available.
The line of storms traversed across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., with generally two more focused areas of wind.
The first was a line segment through the following counties: Ogle, northern DeKalb, northern Kane, southern McHenry, far northern Cook, and southern Lake.
A second one moved across far southern Lee County and along the far northern LaSalle County border. This weakened slightly before entering the far southern Chicago metro, but still had 40+ mph wind gusts, before re-intensifying in northwest Indiana.

8 Homes Damaged in Huntley
The village of Huntley is continuing to address issues caused by the storm that moved through the area.
“At this time, it appears that there were straight-line winds with gusts up to 70 mph,” said Deputy Chief Michael Klunk of the Huntley Police Department. “The most significant issues appear to be in the downtown and adjacent area, but we are seeing damage villagewide.”
Village personnel worked through the night and continued efforts Wednesday.
A preliminary inspection indicated eight homes with significant damage and one home that has been deemed uninhabitable. Building department staff will continue assessments, and it is possible those numbers will rise.
The village will issue building permits for documented storm-related damage at no charge.
Storm debris is being moved to the parkway to clear roads and sidewalks, with the help of Rolling Meadows and McHenry public works crews. Residents are asked to move any debris from their property to the parkway by Tuesday, Oct. 2, for collection.
If citizens have questions on this, please contact the Public Works department at 847-515-5222.
ComEd worked diligently in our area through the night to restore power, Klunk said.
As of Wednesday, about 700 customers were without power.
“We have an amazing community and many residents have expressed interest in helping with the clean up efforts,” Klunk said. “For everyone’s safety, we ask our citizens to refrain from clean-up work in the public right of way. Crews from the village of Huntley, other municipalities, and contractors will address these issues.
“Residents’ efforts are best focused on helping their neighbors with clean up on private property. We also ask that they remain cognizant of street closures and not enter a barricaded street unless they live there.”
