Q: Hey, Jennifer Jarland! How do I recycle child car seats?

A: There are not a lot of programs available for expired car seats, unfortunately. In fact, until now, I have only known of one mail-in program and two other places that will take them. More on that in a moment.

Target Take Back Program – Limited Time Only

First let me tell you about an exciting opportunity that is a limited-time-only option. TerraCycle and Target have partnered to create a free recycling initiative for your old baby and child car seats at participating Target stores. See online info here.

This special program is only during a two-week window around Earth Day (April 22). From April 17 through April 30, you have the opportunity to recycle your old car seat at participating Target locations! Simply bring your old car seat to the designated Target Take Back recycling area at a participating Target store.

All car seat brands are accepted for recycling. In return for recycling your car seat, you will earn a 20 percent discount on a new car seat.
