There are multiple closures on the Fox River Trail through Elgin and South Elgin, as well as on the Stearns Road Trail in St. Charles. Here’s a map with more information.
The Kane County Forest Preserve District will post updates on its website, as they become available.
Just in case the map is hard to read in this format, the four closures are:
I-90 Bridge Reconstruction
As part of the Illinois Tollway’s I-90 construction project, the bridge over the Fox River is being replaced. This project includes the removal of the bike bridge under the vehicle bridge. There will temporarily be no crossing over the Fox River at this location. There will be intermittent closures of the Fox River Trail due to construction. Construction access for the project will be from Duncan Avenue. Bridge construction is expected to be completed in 2017. For more information, visit this page on the Illinois Tollway website.
Raymond Street Bridge
The structure under the railroad bridge has sustained several years of damage due to flood events and must be replaced. For the best long-terms solution, the Kane County Forest Preserve District is proposing to construct a tunnel underneath the railroad tracks, to re-route the Fox River Tail at this location. The district is presently in the engineering phase of this project.
A section of the Fox River Trail is not presently owned by the Kane County Forest Preserve District. The district is trying to secure ownership to reestablish this important trail linkage. Due to an adjacent construction project, the district was forced to forced to close this section of the Fox River Trail from State Street to Robinson Street until further notice. This portion of the trail will be reopened upon completion of the nearby construction.
This closure at Illinois Route 25 and Stearns Road is due to construction of the nearby railway viaduct at Gilberts Street. This section of the Stearns Road trail is expected to reopen on Sept. 1, 2015.
