The Kane County Veterans Treatment Court recently conducted its latest graduation ceremony, marking another milestone in its mission to help veterans overcome challenges related to substance abuse and mental health.

The event was held in a Kane County courtroom filled with family, friends and fellow veterans. The two graduates were showered with praise and applause for completing what was repeatedly described as a long and rigorous program toward recovery and accountability.

Established in January 2018, the Kane County Veterans Treatment Court offers veterans who find themselves caught up in the criminal justice system a second chance through comprehensive treatment programs and close supervision.

Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission Asst. Superintendent Nate Johnson shared a quote from the singer Jelly Roll with both men as an inspiration for the future: "The windshield is larger than the rearview mirror for a reason. What lies ahead is far more significant than what's behind you."

At the graduation ceremony, both men were also honored with a quilt from the organization Illinois Quilts of Valor (https://www.qovf.org/state-coordinators/illinois/), a challenge coin and a recognition pin. Yet, the biggest reward came at the conclusion of the event when a Kane County judge officially dismissed their cases.

The graduation ceremony serves as a reminder of the commitment of the Kane County community to honor the service of veterans and provide them with the assistance they deserve.
