Kane County Pet of the Week - Besty
“You cannot share your life with a dog, as I had done in Bournemouth, or a cat, and not know perfectly well that animals have personalities and minds and feelings." – Jane Goodall, English primatologist, anthropologist, zoologist
She might seem a bit intimidating when you first see her, but all you have to do is look deep into her eyes to see the gentleness of her soul.
Weighing in at only 95 pounds and some change, Betsy, a 2-year-old spayed gray and brown Pit Bull-terrier-mix, is not a dog anyone can easily miss or even dismiss. One might call her a “robust" young lady who evidently hasn't missed too many meals in her lifetime.
A strong girl who doesn't pull or jump when she's on a leash, Betsy's overall demeanor is one of calm, which is a good thing since she is very short, stout and muscular. During her evaluations, when she had her stuffed squeaky toy with her, she allowed kennel staff to gently take the toy from her mouth with not even a whimper.
She enjoys meeting other dogs, even initiating the encounter. If the other dog jumps on her or her face, she will correct them so they won't do it again. Then, she will walk away totally disinterested in the other dog.
The only trick she seems to know is 'sit', which she has learned to perform only if a treat is given first. After all, a girl has to get what she can when she can, right ladies?
Her ears are cropped fairly close to her head, a possible throwback to the belief that shorter ears would give her a more defined appearance. Unfortunately, pit bulls with cropped ears might be perceived by the public in a negative way. However, nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to Betsy.
Although not too keen on cuddles, she does enjoy a good petting. In fact, if she could get petted every day before she takes her daily naps, that would make her life so much better. She's lives for naps!
