Kane County Animal Control Pet of the Week - Meet Soot

KCAC's Adorable, Adoptable Pet of the Week is written by Tecla Metzel of Kane County Animal Control. 8/25/2025 9:00AM

“Beware of the night, child. All cats are black in the dark." – Jean Genet, French novelist & playwright

Myths about black cats in Western culture (source: https://www.fourpaws.com/pets-101/cat-corner/black-cat-myths-and-facts) began during the settling of America when the pioneers actually believed that witches existed. However, the myths about black cats have been around for thousands of years.

The belief was that witches had the ability to come and go as black cats in order to spy on humans and perform their magic.

As the summer begins to wind down and the winds of fall are fast approaching, KCAC is ready to go on record as saying black cats have no more magical powers than any other feline, unless it's making someone fall in love with them because they're so darn adorable and sweet.

As it is with Soot, a 6-month-old black Domestic Shorthair kitten that was owner surrendered along with her sibling, Celebrity Steve. Telling them apart is easy as long as you can find the small white patch on Soot's chest. Brother Steve doesn't have any white on him.

Soot is perhaps the shyer of the two kittens. If placed in an unfamiliar situation, she will hold back, look for a hiding place until she feels that it is safe to venture out. Sometimes she acts like a timid field mouse, sitting up straight, ears erect, staring directly at whatever she's afraid of, eyes wide open.

So, to any of her potential adopters, Soot will need time to get acclimated to her new surroundings. Giving her cat toys and engaging her in stimulating activities also will help her adjust. Since she is still a kitten, her kitten brain is getting continual stimulation with all of the sights, sounds and smells of her new world.

Petting her won't be difficult, either, since she enjoys getting soft caresses on her head and face. She will actually put her ears back and begin to relax as she gives in to the pure enjoyment of getting petted.

Soot is proof positive that black cats are not evil nor do they have special powers. If anything, just as the folks in the United Kingdom and Asia believe, luck will be yours in life if you own a black cat.

Soot is waiting to make your dreams come true.
