Kane County Animal Control Pet of the Week - Meet Quinoa

KCAC's Adorable, Adoptable Pet of the Week is written by Tecla Metzel of Kane County Animal Control. 9/19/2025 12:00PM

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." – from the 1942 film, Casablanca, said by Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart)

She came to KCAC as a stray, nervous, full of fear.

You could see it in her eyes, the lack of trust in humans, in humanity in general, especially in the ones that had let her down time and time again.

Since arriving at KCAC, she has begun the journey of healing through the caring environment our kennel staff has created for her. Although she's not a cat who will approach first, she will sit with you a little way away, so you have to stretch in order to pet her. But she will let you pet her.     Quinoa2.jpeg

If you can pull her close to you, she will make the supreme effort of cuddling with you. Once you're done, she may run away because it's just too much stimulation, too much…cuddling.

Her name is Quinoa (keen∙waa) and she's only 4-months-old! She has yellow eyes that stare at you as though she's attempting to figure out what kind of being she has encountered and if it can be trusted.

Her white chest and brown and tan tiger markings make it seem as though she should have relatives living in a tropical rainforest in Indonesia. Her entire “outfit" of fur is offset by white paws which add just the right amount of contrast. Dress her up in a scarf or small vest made for cats and, right away, the next model sensation is ready to strut her stuff on a runway.

In other words, Quinoa is a beautiful cat!

She's also a sucker for a pole with a feather or fish attached to the end. She loves chasing it from room to room, upstairs, downstairs or just around the living room floor. Spending time with her playing with toys is a good way to gain her trust and let her know that she is number one in your life.

She may always appear a little skittish because street life doesn't just wash away with the first cuddle session, but we think she is on her way to a better life! Here's looking at you, Quinoa!

KCAC Update

Congratulations to Iced Tea (now known as Whiskers), the very beautiful brown and black Domestic Shorthair that came to KCAC as a stray!

Her new family wanted to find a cat that would cuddle with them as well as spend quality shoulder-hugging time. Iced Tea fit the bill completely.

After a few sweet meows from her carrier, she was whisked away to her new home where, I'm happy to report, she is settling in as though she has always lived there!

We are so happy for you!
