Kane County Animal Control Pet of the Week - Sweet Potato

“The only thing a cat worries about is what's happening right now. As we tell the kittens, you can only wash one paw at a time." – Lloyd Alexander, American author, fantasy novels for children & young adults

She gave birth to so many kittens!

Eight, to be exact! All of them orange with little bits of white on their faces and tails and toes. Every one of them a smaller version of their momma. All of them sharing the same wide-eyed stare as Sweet Potato, a 3-year-old orange Domestic Shorthair found as a stray.     Sweet Potato1.jpg

Some believe that orange cats are a little less intelligent than other felines listed on the cat tree of life. We don't think there's much truth to this statement, however, after giving birth to her babies, it did take her a day or so to finally get the hang of her duties as the sole parent. Eventually, she came around, she caught on and even excelled in her role as the cat octo-mom!

Sweet Potato is very sweet, very affectionate, and very vocal. She doesn't mind getting picked up and held for short periods of time. She will even lean her head into your neck so she can catch a nuzzle or two.

She likes to follow people around, especially whoever her person of the day might be. At some point her independent streak will emerge. That's when she will go off on her own to find new spaces to explore.

As independent as she likes to be, however, there's a part of her that thrives on attention and getting all the petting sessions she can handle. If she feels lonely, she will appear by your side again, asking to be held and petted.

Thankfully, her days as the mother of eight kittens have ended. We sincerely hope she won't have to face life as a stray ever again. Of course, she's looking for that permanent home to call her own, preferably with no other cats.

Sweet Potato is looking forward to meeting her forever family where she can finally just be an orange cat!    sweet potato2.jpg
