The missing 25-year-old Elgin man has been found and is reunited with his family, the Elgin Police Department reports on its Facebook page.

“Terrence Ivery has been located and is being reunited with his family,” said Elgin Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda. “Thank you to all who shared our post from last week and expressed concern for his well-being.”

Elgin police had asked for help from the community in finding Terrence Ivery, who was last seen around noon Aug. 8, 2014, at his residence in the 600 block of Packard Drive in Elgin. He had been last seen wearing a blue or black T-shirt and blue or black shorts. He walks with a limp and has been known to travel by train into Chicago.

Citizens were asked to call the Elgin Police non-emergency number at 847-289-2700 with any information about Ivery. The Facebook post did not say how he was found or whether social-media alert contributed to his return to his family, but the post is an example of how social media is contributing to increased communication and community involvement in public safetey.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office helped spread the word through its Facebook page. Between the two, thousands of people saw the post and many commented and shared information.

The Elgin Police Department has an outstanding Facebook page, with frequent, valuable updates and 7,793 likes as of Aug. 13, 2014.
